Sports Movies
Sports movies often represent the best of the human condition. Frequently dealing with overcoming adversity, they offer inspiration and hope.
Many of these films are also available in DVD format.

A League of Their Own (1992) Based on the real-life Woman's Baseball League of the 1940's, this is a funny and heart-warming story of a little-know part of Americana. Starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O'Donnel, and Madonna.

The Babe (1992) A poignant, if often unflattering look at the life of Babe Ruth. John Goodman turns in a good performance of the Sultan of Swat. Also starring Kelly McGillis.

Cobb (1994) Another stark look at a baseball legend, Ty Cobb. Cobb was notorious on and off the field, and Tommy Lee Jones plays this ascerbic character to the hilt. Also starring Robert Wuhl.

Eight Men Out (1988) The story of the infamous Chicago "Black Sox", accused of cheating in the 1919 World Series. Well acted drama. Starring John Cusack, Clifton James.

Field of Dreams (1989) A very popular, feel-good film. An Iowa farmer builds a ball field in the middle of his corn field, and they come to play. Oh boy, do they come to play. Starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan.

Major League (1989) Major silliness in this spoof of a woe-begotten Cleveland Indians and their fight for a winning season. Silly, but lots of fun. Starring Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen.

The Natural (1984) Perhaps one of the best nostalgic baseball films made, the fictional story of the icon of all sports; the natural player. Interesting plot line. Starring Robert Redford, Robert Duvall.

North Dallas Forty (1979) A gritty look into the world of pro football. Pretty decent acting. Starring Nick Nolte, Mac Davis. Rocky (1976) Yo! Adrian! This is the original and certainly the best of this far too long series of flicks. The quentessential underdog flick. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire.
Slap Shot (1977) A down-on-its-luck minor league hockey team and its struggle for respectability. Often moving, with some of the most hilarious scenes of any sports movie made. Starring Paul Newman, Strother Martin.
