Song and Dance

Chicago (2003). Bob Fosse's sexy cynicism still shines in Chicago, a faithful movie adaptation of the choreographer-director's 1975 Broadway musical. Of course the story, all about merry murderesses and tabloid fame, is set in the Roaring '20s, but Chicago reeks of '70s disenchantment--this isn't just Fosse's material, it's his attitude, too. Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are beautifully matched as Jazz Age vixens, and Richard Gere gleefully sheds his customary cool to belt out a showstopper. (Yes, they all do their own singing and dancing.)
Duets (2000) Starring: Huey Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Giamatti. A music-filled film about the Karaoke circuit. An odd-ball cast of characters travel bar to bar competing for ever increasing prizes. Hustlers, cons on the run, and a burned out businessman make up the competition for the grand prize in Omaha. Great music, funky acting, and a pleasant fun flick. A Chorus Line (1985) Young hopefuls audition for chorus in this adaptation of legendary Broadway musical. Critics were lukewarm. Appeals primarily to those who didn't see the stage production, with its memorable songs. Stars: Michael Douglas, Terrence Mann Director: Richard Attenborough Dirty Dancing (1987) A young girl finds romance and dancing while on vacation with her family. Predictable plot, but some decent music and dancing. Starring Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey.
